A historic famous fort called Razi Khar

Photo art done by my friend Mr. sam_Sayeed from chiktan

Chiktan Khar is also called Razi Khar is a ruin of a fort. The fort has an interesting history behind it.

The fort was built in the 16th century and had nine stories.  Back in 8th century, Prince of Baltistan Tahtah Khan took Shelter in Chiktan area and decided to construct a fort as he was completely mesmerized by the beauty of this place. Though he could only build a small palace, Balti craftsmen constructed the castle in the 16th century that served as a royal residence for centuries.

Chiktan Castle was once a magnificent piece of architecture thoughtfully designed by architect and carpenter Shinkhen Chandan.

It is composed of rammed earth and stone masonry with mud mortar. , timber was used to support the ceilings of the structure and to frame the doors and windows.

The Palace was one of the Masterpieces of Ladakh and Tibetian Architecture which was famous across Ladakh, and  Tibet. It reportedly had a rotating room which used to rotate with support of air blowing.2

Prepared for impending attacks, Chiktan Castle was a symbol of unity, strength, brotherhood, and community for the peoples of the region. The castle was attacked several times during its history, but was not abandoned until the late 19th century. Neglect and natural elements have left the castle in an advanced state of decay. Large portions of the outer walls have collapsed, partially due to the removal of stone in the mid 20th century for a local government hospital which was Sanctioned and allotted for the Royal Family to construct but Father in Law of the King decided to keep the money and decided to use bricks of the wall of the fort beside the Wood Carving.

Seeing the Negligence, people of Village started using wood as resource which slowly destroyed the Fort. Stories of Haunting were spread to stop people from exploiting the Fort.

The story of chiktan Khar

The story of Chiktan Khar. After the death of Gasho Tha Tha Khan many of his decendent ruled Sot, Chiktan and Pashkyum. The ruler Kẖokẖor Baghram (1535– 1550) entered into agreements with the Ladakhís gyalpo and sent his second son, Tsering Mālik , to Chiktan, as his governor. Argyāl Mālik , the first-born son, stayed with the father and, on his death, succeeded him as sultan of Sut. Tsering Mālik had the Chiktan castle built, and took up his residence there as ruler of the country. At his father's death, he, who entertained wishes of independence, but was unwilling to go against his elder brother openly, started attending the court of the king of Ladakh and made a pact with him.
